ZUMBIDO — Spatial Motion as Behaviour
A spatial-panning experiment where audio behaves like one or more living entities moving around the listener.
This is an experiment, not a confirmed product. Its name, direction and existence may change.
The question
What if spatial movement were described as behaviour rather than automation curves or an LFO shape?
ZUMBIDO represents audio as an entity moving in a two-dimensional space around a listener. Instead of drawing a path, the musician chooses how the entity behaves: wandering, orbiting, moving as a swarm, splitting or travelling from side to side.
The direction
Movement can be free, triggered by transients or MIDI, synchronized to tempo, or made deliberately stable. High-level controls adjust activity, chaos, spread and focus without requiring the musician to manage every coordinate.
An optional spectral mode divides the signal into low, mid and high entities. Each range can move independently: slower and heavier in the low end, balanced through the mids, and lighter or more reactive in the highs.
What remains unresolved
The motion must sound intentional at ordinary stereo widths, remain controllable in a mix and avoid collapsing into decorative movement. The experiment is testing how much autonomy can feel alive before it stops feeling musical.
